It's the Lord's Day
This morning there was an assembly of Christians in Antioch.
Sermon: Antioch - A model church ~ Ferrell Jenkins
Acts 11:19-26 When Christians were persecuted, Christians traveled to Antioch. They taught the gospel to both Jews and Hellenists. A great number turned to the Lord. Jerusalem sent Barnabas. Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Paul. They met with church in Antioch for a year.
Antioch was founded by Seleucus ~ 300 BC. This city has been continuously inhabited since then.
- Prosperous commerce. Meeting point of Greek and oriental civilizations. It was third in importance after Rome and Alexandria. It was the ideal base for expansion of gospel among the Greeks. Now the city is called Antakya.

- St. Peter's Church - present appearance from crusades, chair celebrates tradition that Peter was first bishop of Antioch. Peter's example was not a good one when he came here, but Catholics have given prominence to Peter.
Beginning of church - Christians were Jews & Gentiles
1) Model in faithfulness, strong teaching program, honored Christ, active in foreign evangelism, unity and liberality (let us follow them in these attributes)
- Disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. Who called them by this name? By God or those in the community? "Those who belong to Christ"
- They sent out Barnabas and Paul
- Famines can be anticipated. Judaea had a famine in the days of Claudius. These brethren determined to send relief
2) Antioch had problems
- Controversy over circumcision Gal 1-2, Acts 15:1-5. James said we will write a letter to them. Paul as apostle to Gentiles. Abstain from blood, idolatry, sexual immorality. Circumcision was not required.
- In post-NT times, the congregation in Antioch became a leader in apostasy (don't follow in this). Ignatius: 1 bishop and plurality of elders and deacons by 170 AD. Became the normal church order. It is called a monarchal episcopate
3) NT church organization - autonomous under Christ, independent
- Christ is head
- Elders, shepherds, bishop / deacons / saints
4) Departure church government changed over several centuries - Council of Antioch (341 AD)
- Bishop in a metropolis (large cities) had precedence over other bishops: Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, Istanbul, Rome
- By 606 the bishop of Rome claimed he ruled over all the church
- Within 400 years there was a schism between the West and East resulting in the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church
It's also Mother's Day
Orhan is the BEST guide ever! He gave all the ladies red carnations for Mother's Day! Thanks Orhan! Turkey celebrates Mother's Day as well. Usually you give your mother flowers and the family has a dinner together.

Antakya Archeological Museum
They are building a new museum to house these antiquities. There were a few mosaics from Daphne, some coins and the Antakya Sarcophagus available for viewing.
